What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic Water is sterile water containing a preservative intended to inhibit the growth of many common bacteria after initial access. It is different from plain sterile water and should not be treated as interchangeable with every laboratory solvent or buffer. Researchers must confirm that the diluent is compatible with the material, method and analytical endpoint in their own protocol.

The presence of a preservative does not remove the need for aseptic technique, suitable storage, contamination controls or institutional risk assessment.
