What is AICAR, and why are researchers studying it?

AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide, usually supplied as its riboside, acadesine) is taken up by cells and converted into ZMP, which mimics AMP and switches on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Researchers use it to study how cells respond to low energy, including glucose uptake and fat burning.

The current state of AICAR research

Cell and animal research: AMPK activation, glucose uptake and endurance in mice.
Clinical research: acadesine was studied in heart surgery and certain blood cancers.
Sport: AICAR is prohibited under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules.

What do AICAR studies show so far?

A widely cited 2008 mouse study (Narkar et al., Cell) reported that AICAR increased running endurance in sedentary mice. Other research confirmed AMPK activation and effects on glucose uptake in cells and animals. Human data is limited.
