MOTS-c Research & Studies Guide
Discover the latest insights on MOTS-c research & studies: what it is, what has been studied and what the findings show.
MOTS-c Research Guide: What the Studies Show
MOTS-c is a small peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA, first described in 2015. It is studied in metabolism, exercise and ageing research, mostly in cell and animal models. MyPep Biotech supplies MOTS-c for laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
What is MOTS-c, and why are researchers studying it?
MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide. Researchers are interested in it because it appears to act as a signal from mitochondria to the rest of the cell, with links to the AMPK energy-sensing pathway, glucose handling and the response to exercise.

The current state of MOTS-c research
- Discovery: first reported by Lee and colleagues in Cell Metabolism (2015).
- Animal research: mouse studies have looked at insulin sensitivity, diet-induced weight gain and physical performance.
- Human research: mainly observational studies measuring natural MOTS-c levels; controlled human trials are limited.
What do MOTS-c studies show so far?
In the original 2015 mouse study, MOTS-c improved insulin sensitivity and limited diet-induced weight gain. Later animal research linked it to exercise capacity and age-related metabolic changes. Human evidence is still early, and most findings come from laboratory models.
Safety considerations and limitations
Because most MOTS-c research is pre-clinical, there is little controlled human safety data. Findings from mice and cells may not translate to people.
How to read MOTS-c research without getting misled
- Check whether a result comes from cells, animals or people.
- Look at the study size, length and comparison group.
- Prefer peer-reviewed journals and trial registries over social media claims.
- Remember that early findings often do not carry over to later studies.
Bottom line for researchers
MOTS-c is a promising mitochondrial signalling peptide for metabolic research, with an evidence base that is still mainly pre-clinical. MyPep Biotech supplies MOTS-c vials in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg from £19.99, labelled with strength and batch number. For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
