Liraglutide Research & Studies Guide
Discover the latest insights on Liraglutide research & studies: what it is, what has been studied and what the findings show.
Liraglutide Research Guide: What the Studies Show
Liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist developed by Novo Nordisk. It was one of the first GLP-1 compounds studied at scale for type 2 diabetes and obesity, and is the once-daily predecessor of semaglutide. MyPep Biotech supplies Liraglutide for laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
What is Liraglutide, and why are researchers studying it?
Liraglutide is a modified version of natural GLP-1 with a fatty-acid chain that extends its action to about a day. It acts on GLP-1 receptors involved in insulin release, appetite and stomach emptying. Researchers often use it as a reference compound when studying newer, longer-acting GLP-1 agonists.

The current state of Liraglutide research
- LEAD programme: Phase 3 trials in type 2 diabetes.
- SCALE programme: Phase 3 trials in obesity and overweight.
- LEADER: a large cardiovascular outcomes trial in type 2 diabetes.
What do Liraglutide studies show so far?
In the SCALE Obesity and Prediabetes trial (New England Journal of Medicine, 2015), 3,731 adults were studied for 56 weeks; average weight reduction was about 8.0% with liraglutide 3.0mg daily compared with about 2.6% with placebo. The LEADER trial (2016) reported fewer major cardiovascular events with liraglutide in type 2 diabetes.
How Liraglutide studies are designed
In the SCALE trials, liraglutide was given once daily, with the dose increased gradually to 3.0mg under medical supervision. This is described only to explain the study design and is not guidance of any kind.
Safety considerations and limitations
The most common side effects in trials were gastrointestinal, such as nausea and diarrhoea. Results apply only to the supervised populations studied.
How to read Liraglutide research without getting misled
- Check whether a result comes from cells, animals or people.
- Look at the study size, length and comparison group.
- Prefer peer-reviewed journals and trial registries over social media claims.
- Remember that early findings often do not carry over to later studies.
Bottom line for researchers
Liraglutide is the original large-scale GLP-1 research compound and a key reference for semaglutide and newer agonists. MyPep Biotech supplies Liraglutide 10mg vials at £43.99. For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
