Tirzepatide Clinical Trials & Research Guide
Discover the latest insights on tirzepatide clinical trials & research, including the SURMOUNT and SURPASS programmes in obesity and type 2 diabetes research.
Tirzepatide Clinical Trials Research Guide
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist developed by Eli Lilly. It has been studied in some of the largest clinical trial programmes in metabolic research, mainly the SURPASS programme (type 2 diabetes) and the SURMOUNT programme (obesity and overweight). This guide summarises what those trials studied and what they reported, for research and educational purposes. MyPep Biotech supplies tirzepatide for laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
What is tirzepatide, and why are researchers studying it?
Tirzepatide is a single peptide that activates two incretin receptors: GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Researchers are interested in it because combining GIP and GLP-1 activity produced larger effects on blood glucose and body weight in trials than GLP-1 activity alone. It sits between single-agonist compounds such as semaglutide (GLP-1) and newer triple agonists such as retatrutide (GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon).

The current state of tirzepatide clinical trials
- SURPASS programme: a series of Phase 3 trials in adults with type 2 diabetes, comparing tirzepatide with placebo and with other glucose-lowering treatments.
- SURMOUNT programme: Phase 3 trials in adults with obesity or overweight, with and without type 2 diabetes.
- Further studies: additional trials have explored areas such as obstructive sleep apnoea, heart failure and cardiovascular outcomes. Registered studies can be searched on ClinicalTrials.gov.
What do tirzepatide results show so far?
The best-known result is SURMOUNT-1, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022. It enrolled 2,539 adults with obesity or overweight (without diabetes) for 72 weeks. Average body-weight reductions were about 15% (5mg), 19.5% (10mg) and 20.9% (15mg), compared with about 3.1% with placebo.
- SURMOUNT-2 studied adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes, and also reported significant weight reductions versus placebo (published in The Lancet, 2023).
- SURMOUNT-3 and SURMOUNT-4 looked at tirzepatide after lifestyle intervention and at what happens when treatment continues versus stops; continuing tirzepatide maintained reductions, while switching to placebo led to weight regain.
- SURPASS trials reported reductions in HbA1c (a long-term blood glucose marker) in type 2 diabetes, alongside weight reductions.
The dosing schedule used in clinical research
In the published trials, participants were assigned to fixed once-weekly maintenance doses (5mg, 10mg or 15mg) reached by gradual escalation over several weeks, under medical supervision. This is described here only to explain how the studies were designed. It is not guidance of any kind, and MyPep Biotech products are not for human use.
Safety considerations and limitations
The most commonly reported adverse events in trials were gastrointestinal, such as nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation, mostly during dose escalation. Trials also have limitations: set populations, fixed durations and close medical monitoring, so results cannot be applied outside those settings.
How to find legitimate trials near you
Clinical trials are listed on ClinicalTrials.gov and, in the UK, through the NIHR Be Part of Research service. Each listing shows the sponsor, location, eligibility criteria and whether it is recruiting. Anyone interested in taking part should speak to a qualified healthcare professional.
How to read tirzepatide trial updates without getting misled
- Check whether a figure is an average from a trial, not an individual outcome.
- Look at the trial length, population and comparison group (placebo or another treatment).
- Prefer peer-reviewed journals (NEJM, The Lancet) and trial registries over social media claims.
- Remember that headline percentages come from supervised studies.
Bottom line for researchers
Tirzepatide has one of the largest published evidence bases of any incretin-based compound, through the SURPASS and SURMOUNT programmes. For laboratory work, MyPep Biotech supplies tirzepatide pens (Tirz pens) from £89.99 and tirzepatide vials from £31.99, labelled with strength and batch number, with same-day dispatch on weekday orders before 2pm. For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
